Reduce Working Hours of Drivers and Save Lives
The union of bus drivers, Unite, has proposed a cut in their driving hours by one hour to reduce the stress level, which will make the roads in the
Unite is asking for the protection of bus drivers by EU laws in the same manner as other professional drivers in the country. The current proposal seeks to reduce the working hours to ten hours a day and limit the driving hours to only eight hours in one day. In addition, the bus owners should ensure that the longest drive in one stretch should not stretch for more than four and a half hours.
This will reduce the congestion on the road, thereby reducing the stress levels of drivers on the road. Due to lesser hazards on the road, the number of accidents and casualties will also go down. However, it is possible that the companies will complain that they will lose money as Unite has also asked the assurance that the drivers will not have to face cuts in their respective salaries. While it may make it expensive in absolute terms, no one will actually lose to a competitor, as the laws will apply to everyone. Further, Unite’s national organiser for the transport sector, Graham Stevenson, points out that lives of people, both drivers and passengers, are at stake. It depends on safe driving and a tiny amount of money can be sacrificed to ensure their safety.
