A Bit of a Rant re Botulinum Injections Sydney
BoTox is now ingrained amongst up-to-date Sydney society and now it has become an integral part of a beauty routine for those in Sydney. Nevertheless I am often astonished by the rumours in connection with the treatment. Here I have included some of the more common myths that we hear day in day out at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I practise as a physician.
Fallacy # 1: My facial muscles could freeze!
The human face has 60 or so muscles. Their relentless use over time may result in the formation of fine lines. The overuse of BoTox may lead to the muscles of the forehead becoming somewhat less taut. Generally doctors use relatively small amounts to will result in you seeming less tired, but still you will always maintain your facial expression.

Therefore by injecting a carefully calculated amount of the toxin in just the right spot you should get a reduction in the fine lines and wrinkles without reducing facial expression.
Fallacy # 2: BoTox is a poison!
This to some extent is true. Its medical name is Botulinum Toxin Type A. An overdose may relax muscles that you do not want loosened and even may make you really ill.
Chemists have an old saying ‘everything is a poison - it all depends on the dose’. A large quantity of any drug may induce sickness. If you drink too much water you will die.
Fallacy # 3: BoTox injections hurt!
The hypodermic needles used at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter less than your hair. Some people liken the shots to getting bitten by a mosquito. Certainly not as sore as having a regular shot.
Fallacy # 4: BoTox will deaden the sensation in my face!
Totally incorrect. BoTox affects the neuromuscular junction, and not on sensate nerves. Only the ability to relax your muscles is affected by BoTox.
Fallacy # 5. You have to keep getting BoTox or you might age quicker than before!
This is also incorrect.
A treatment will be effective for about three months. Later injections do last longer. The wrinkles will slowly return as the muscle regains its normal function. However they will definitely not be any more pronounced than before.
In fact any lines will more often than not be softer than if you hadn’t undergone BoTox treatment - even when you don’t repeat the injections. Primarily because your skin has had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the treatment.
